Hugh Jackman and his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, with whom he “rarely” spends Valentine’s Day.
Hugh Jackman’s Tribeca coffee shop now sells chocolates in time for Valentine’s Day, but the Aussie actor rarely spends the special day with his own sweetheart.
“I don’t know what it is, my wife and I have been together 17 years, and we are rarely if ever together on the day,” he told the Daily News. “It would be nice if I change it up and we’re actually together. That would be a shock.”
Jackman, who’s married to actress and fellow Australian Deborra-Lee Furness, is in London rehearsing for the film version of the musical “Les Misérables.”
“We exchanged our gifts before I came on this trip,” he said. “She’s going to be with me three days afterwards. But for me, the most important element of Valentine’s Day is the element of surprise. I think you’ve got to change it up every year.”
When the “X-Men” star isn’t away on set, he’s often spotted with his family in the West Village where they live, not too far from the coffee shop he co-owns.
Laughing Man Marketplace, which opened on Duane St. in October, just added chocolates to the menu. The bite-sized treats come in different sized boxes ranging from 4 pieces for $8.50 to 48 pieces for $90.
“The company is relatively new and...it’s got to be about the product first,” Jackman said. “They are phenomenal, and they’re kosher, fair trade, rainforest certified. It’s good for everybody.”
Best of all, 100% of profits from the chocolate and everything else sold by Laughing Man will go to charities benefiting kids like Harlem Village Academies, a successful network of charter schools.
“Harlem Village Academies is at the moment a high school and middle school,” Jackman said. “Now they’re planning an elementary school. What they do is so inspiring and incredible in an area which has traditionally really struggled.
“So the idea that they will now be able to serve kids from kindergarten right through, and create a national model that hopefully can scale out is really exciting,” he added.
The actor will rehearse for “Les Misérables” for another few weeks before filming begins.
“I’m in my second week of rehearsal here,” he said. “I had a very exciting day today actually, singing a new song by the composers of the original.
“They’ve added some new music to the movie,” Jackman continued. “And sitting in a room with the composer Claude-Michel [Schönberg\], singing one of his songs, was a great honor and great thrill.”
